چکیده

The Arctic Ocean likely impacts global climate through its effect on the rate of deep-water formation and the subsequent influence on global thermohaline circulation. Here, the renewal of the deep waters in the isolated Canadian Basin is quanitified. Using hydraulic theory and hydrographic observations, the authors calculate the magnitude of this renewal where circumstances have thus far prevented direct measurements. A volume flow rate of Q 0.25 0.15 Sv (Sv 10 m s ) from the Eurasian Basin to the Canadian Basin via a deep gap in the dividing Lomonosov Ridge is estimated. Deep-water renewal time estimates based on this flow are consistent with C isolation ages. The flow is sufficiently large that it has a greater impact on the Canadian Basin deep water than either the geothermal heat flux or diffusive fluxes at the deep-water boundaries.

Evolution of the Deep Water in the Canadian Basin in the Arctic Ocean

An overflow of magnitude 0.25 Sv (Sv 10 m 3 s ) has been predicted to enter the Makarov Basin (part of the Canadian Basin in the Arctic Ocean) from the Eurasian Basin via a deep gap in the dividing Lomonosov ridge. The authors argue that this overflow does not ventilate the deep Makarov Basin (below 2400 m) where the water is too warm and salty to be compatible with such a large cold fresh infl...

Glacial geomorphology of the Central Arctic Ocean: the Chukchi Borderland and the Lomonosov Ridge

The last decade of geophysical seafloor mapping in the Arctic Ocean from nuclear submarines and icebreakers reveals a wide variety of glaciogenic geomorphic features at water depths reaching 1000 m. These findings provide new and intriguing insights into the Quaternary glacial history of the Northern Hemisphere. Here we integrate multiand single beam bathymetric data, chirp sonar profiles and s...

Early to middle Eocene history of the Arctic Ocean from Nd-Sr isotopes in fossil fish debris, Lomonosov Ridge

[1] Strontium and neodymium radiogenic isotope ratios in early to middle Eocene fossil fish debris (ichthyoliths) from Lomonosov Ridge (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302) help constrain water mass compositions in the Eocene Arctic Ocean between !55 and !45 Ma. The inferred paleodepositional setting was a shallow, offshore marine to marginal marine environment with limited connect...

Seismic transect across the Lomonosov and Mendeleev Ridges: Constraints on the geological evolution of the Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean

[1] We report on seismic and petrological data that provide new constraints on the geological evolution of the Amerasia Basin. A seismic reflection transect across the Makarov Basin, located between the Mendeleev and Lomonosov Ridges, shows a complete undisturbed sedimentary section of Mesozoic/Cenozoic age. In contrast to the Mendeleev Ridge, the margin of the Lomonosov Ridge is wide and shows...

Contrasting glacial/interglacial regimes in the western Arctic Ocean as exempli¢ed by a sedimentary record from the Mendeleev Ridge

Distinct cyclicity in lithology and microfaunal distribution in sediment cores from the Mendeleev Ridge in the western Arctic Ocean (water depths ca. 1.5 km) reflects contrasting glacial/interglacial sedimentary patterns. We conclude that during major glaciations extremely thick pack ice or ice shelves covered the western Arctic Ocean and its circulation was restricted in comparison with interg...
